FAQ
- What is the difference between takt and cycle time?
- Takt is the customer-driven pace (available time ÷ demand). Cycle time is how long the process actually takes. If cycle time exceeds takt, you will miss demand without overtime, extra shifts, or more capacity.
- Should breaks be subtracted?
- Yes if people or the line stop during breaks. If the equipment runs through breaks, use net available production time that matches reality.
- How do I handle multiple shifts?
- Sum net available time across shifts and divide by the demand that those shifts must cover. Mixing a 2-shift time base with 1-shift demand will make takt look easier than it is.
- What if cycle time is longer than takt?
- You cannot meet demand as currently staffed. Options: reduce cycle time, add a parallel station, add shifts, or lower promised volume. The Production Rate and OEE tools help quantify the gap.
